Claire Update
Please continue to pray for Claire. She has been in the hospital for a month and is doing physical and occupational therapy. She is working very hard and getting stronger everyday. Your prayers sustain her and our family. God Bless you!!
Computer Problems
I have been behind for over a month on blogging. My computer crashed again, and I had to wait for the fan to be replaced. Once the computer was working I made it a point to back up all of the necessary files just in case this happens again. It is a difficult transition when you have access to everything you think you need at the push of button, and later find yourself not being able to have a button to push. I don't want to rely on technology as I do. Many times it is a blessing and a curse. Thank you Lord for allowing me to trust you, and for showing me Your way.
A time for Sacraments for the Murrays
Stephen and Claire received sacraments this weekend. Stephen received First Communion and Claire received Confirmation. The family attended and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit certainly rested upon us this weekend.
I read a commentary that I want to share. It is very beautiful:
"Yielding to the Holy Spirit"
"Tears are the humble, created water of my heart that corresponds to the powerful uncreated water of the Spirit's life in me. Tears are perhaps the most rejuvenating and re-creating water of all, the evidence that I have allowed grace to melt the ice at the center of my being. As Leon Bloy says strikingly, where there are tears, there is the Holy Spirit, because the Spirit of God is always, as at the beginning, 'hovering over the waters.' What areas of my life are still rigid, refusing to yield to resistance and be shaped by God's fingers?....
In what parts of my person do I still allow the old inflexible grouch of sin to have his way? Each one of us, according to our state in life, has different strategies for allowing the old Adam and Eve to survive in us. We may have that rascal, the decrepit old self, locked away safely, but surreptitiously we still pass him food through the slot in the dungeon door, do we not?
The Glory of God is always found in movements of love, in communication of life, never in static routine cramped piety, thoughtless repetition of official acts of conventional observance, external religious acts that could easily become the letter that kills, the continuing tyranny of the old, sinful self. The May Magnificat.
I came upon this beautiful poem dedicated to the Blessed Mother and her month of May. I found it in the back of the Book with the Divine Office. I never would have found it if my book had not fallen and opened to the page. I love it. It is also a tribute to mothers who try to model after the Blessed Mother with God's grace. Lourdes Pilgrimage 2011
Our good friend and Knight of Malta Tim Jeffries sent us these exquisite pictures of their recent pilgrimage to Lourdes. Viewing them brought back so many fond memories for Claire and I. Most importantly, of Our Lady's hand in our opportunity to participate in last year's trip, as well as her protective mantle in Claire's care
over the last year. I know that Claire is much stronger spiritually today as result of that grace and peace filled journey. Physically, Claire has become weaker. Especially given her recent surgery, which has pushed her recovery back further. Since the spinal fusion Claire has had to regain muscle strength that she took for granted in the past. Claire is in both physical and occupational therapy to try and rebuild her muscle control. There are plans for her to enter the hospital in the rehabilitation unit in order to work on strengthening. Being in the hospital is not the best or easiest decision, but for Claire it will allow her to learn new skills and get stronger. We thank you for your continued prayers. We ask that the Blessed Mother pray for you and bring you to the place of healing at Lourdes. May the almighty Lord bless us, protect from evil and bring us to everlasting life. Amen.
Happy Birthday Matthew!!!
Matthew turned 22 last week!! We are so amazed, the time just flew by. I remember mothers telling me to pay attention when your children are younger because the time you spend with them is so brief. I, of course, did not heed their advice and look back now on all my areas of imperfection as a mother. While, at the same time, witnessing God's providence and His perfect will. These were an answer to prayer, and enabled us to get out of His way. Still, God's grace can do all things and it has in Matthew's life. The name Matthew means "gift of God" He has certainly been a gift for our whole family and as you can see by the picture, everyone loves their older brother and he is so wonderful to them. He is preparing for his vocation, in whatever God calls him to, in the cell of the family, our domestic church. May God continue to bless you Matthew, and we will keep you and your vocation in constant prayer.

"To the Author" band at the Pan de Vida Retreat in Redding
Joe, Sheila, Matthew, Claire and I spent Divine Mercy Sunday in Redding at the first Pan de Vida Retreat of the West Coast. It was certainly a grace filled weekend for everyone.
You can see the pictures of Sheila and Claire with the band members. They had a great time especially with the guys who played for Our Lord all weekend.
Great group of young men. It is always a blessing for our family to participate as a group sharing the faith with others, including and most importantly young people. John Paul II was beatified over the weekend and during the retreat we remember his call for a "New Evangelization." We can reflect on his own radical conversion to Christ and strive to achieve that. I desire and meditate on this kind of conversion often, and tried to call this to mind throughout the weekend. We attempt, as a family, to live the message of the Second Vatican Council that encourages everyone to be a saint, and calls each of us to holiness. It is true that when we live the missionary spirit of striving for holiness we call others to holiness. Our challenge is to exemplify that call that Jesus made to His disciples and go and teach the good news. When we live the Gospel message we become missionaries of Jesus Christ to others. During the weekend there were many graces and we were so blessed to be a part of it. You can tell who enjoyed it the most with these pictures of the girls.
May the peace of our Lord be with you all!!!

Kieran's Bike trip..
Kieran spent the last week traveling down Hwy. 1 to Big Sur with his Boy Scout troop. In total, the trip was over 150 miles. The views were spectacular and it was quite an adventure. He has become the cyclist over the last few months and he is enjoying it tremendously. I am very grateful to his boy scout troop for their generosity and kindness; without the Scouts I don't believe Kieran would have discovered his new passion.
Stephen's First Confession
During this Octave of Easter, as well as the Divine Mercy week, Stephen had the opportunity to receive his first confession. It was very sweet. Normally I am not one to take pictures, especially of such an intimate sacrament as First Reconciliation. But, given Stephen's gifts, and that his hero is Fr. Jerry, and lastly that he is preparing for First Communion I thought it appropriate to capture this moment of grace. Stephen loved every minute of it. He ran up the steps for confession. Fr. Jerry let me know that he thought he would vibrate right out of the chair. The next evening Stephen expected to return for confession. Joe and I were surprised at his enthusiasm to receive confession. His desire to return the next evening confirms his love for the church, as well as his ease with Fr. Jerry, and most importantly Christ's presence in that sacrament.Thank you Lord for your graces and mercy this week and throughout the season of Easter.

What a beautiful season of the year!! Now that Lent is behind us we can continue to work toward heaven with our new resolutions of prayer, fasting and almsgiving.
Our family was so very honored to be at the cathedral for the mass with Bishop Salvatore. Matthew served both the Easter Vigil as well as the 10:00 a.m. mass the next day. It is a very busy time for the Murray clan, the kids are on break from school. But, we have star testing, spring activities with boy scouts, kenpo and girls club. Not to mention the yard work, spring cleaning and Holy Week preparations. So, I am a couple days past Easter Sunday, but the Church celebrates Easter Sunday during the octave after Easter Sunday. This is awesome!! We will then celebrate for 7 weeks in this Easter season remembering Christ's passion, death and most importantly His resurrection. We have been saved. We enter into Divine Mercy Sunday when His love and mercy is with us in a most profound way!!

Lifelong Love
I believe we need to strengthen marriages. This video does a beautiful job highlighting commitment and the courage to love... forever. I spoke to a young woman today who was planning her wedding in July. She is enjoying every minute of the wedding plans. She told me, " You only get to plan one?" "Well, hopefully!" I told her. Our culture continues to discourage the self denial and sanctity of marriage. While the Church continues to promote the beauty of self-giving love within the vocations of married, single, and religious life. Let us strive as members of the mystical body to enlighten and transform the culture especially with regards to the grace that the powerful sacrament of marriage has to transform the world.

I have a great family...
I know many people can say the same thing about their children, their family, and they should. But, I know it is important to say that about my wonderful family. Things are going well this Lenten season for the Murray family. Joe and I had the opportunity to get away for a couple of days to celebrate our upcoming birthdays. We went to Napa for a two nights and enjoyed some time together. While we were gone Sheila, Kieran and Claire stayed home watching the children and maintaining the fort. My mom and sister were able to come for some respite time and help out when needed. We are so thankful for their help and generosity. It is important for couples to get away and spend time listening to each other and remembering why they are married. This time together enables them to nurture and sustain the beautiful vocation of marriage. Our selfless family enabled us to do just that. I love our family and I appreciate their kind gift, and I praise God often for His blessings and their presence in our lives. It is important to thank the source and giver of all gifts and never more than this weekend was it apparent to Joe and I.

Kieran's Snow Camp Survival
Kieran recently attended a snow survival camp with his Boy Scout troop. Each Scout dug out their own cave to sleep in over night. It was quite an experience for Kieran, this is not the first time he has gone on the survival camp and it may not be the last. It is very impressive the skills and techniques they instruct over the weekend. It certainly is not something the girls and I would want to participate in, but Matthew and Joe were intrigued and encouraged by the trip. Good for you Kieran!
Happy Lent!!
Now that Lent has officially begun it is very important not to lose the sense of joy that we have within us. As scripture tells us, let them see the hope that is in you. We are hoping to come close to God and this takes some work, but no less joy. I wanted to share this Brian Regan comedy with you as you journey into Lent. We stumbled upon him from Sr. Miriam's blog (soltsisters) and it brought us some laughter, especially at a time needed given Claire's surgery. She appreciated him given her own Emergency room past. Our whole family has watched and enjoyed his humor which is wonderful because as a family we can come together and experience laughter and joy.
May our Lord continue to richly bless you and your family this Lent and into Easter.

Claire's home!
Thanks be to God, Claire has returned home and she has been recovering at home with the family. She has to wear a brace around her trunk when she is not sleeping in order to stabilize her and allow her back to fuse. Due to the brace, Claire has spent the last couple of days becoming accustomed to completing daily activities in her brace and regaining the use of certain muscles that were comproised during the surgery. She will have several follow-up appointments and she hopes to return to physical and occupational therapy soon to begin to work more on her upper body strength. Your prayers continue to surround our family and we dedicate our evening prayer to all those who care for us and have been a tremendous gift to our family.

Sheila spent her birthday with her Nana, her aunts, her father, and her sister Claire who was still recovering in the hospital. What a light Sheila has been to our family, we are so grateful for her presence and joy. Although with the chaos of our lives currently, it may not appear as though we appreciate her; we feel deeply graced by the gift she has been to our lives.
May God continue to bless her future as he had our family by her presence with us.

Claire is doing well!
Claire is doing much better. Her recovery has been rough, nothing out of the ordinary for Claire. She did have complications with her lungs given the amount of blood she was given during her surgery. She also had some concerns with pain and with her shunts functioning properly. But, she has turned the corner and is doing much better now. We are confident that it is because of the tremendous amounts of prayers from so many people who have stormed heaven for Claire and her healing. It certainly is a grace to see the corrections made to her spine. And, we are so thankful that she now has more strength and we pray that with therapy will regain more leg and arm function.

Surgery for Claire
Claire's surgery went very well. It was over 12 hours and she needed 5 liters of blood in the process. As a result, she is very swollen from all of the blood products. She is in a great deal of pain as well. However, all of this seems worth it given that her curvature was progressing and may have eventually caused further damage to her spinal cord. The surgeon mentioned that they were able to make a 70% correction with her scoliosis and correct a portion of the caiphosis. At this point, Claire's arm and leg function have improved. We noticed an increase in arm function, and we will have to wait and see on her leg function given that she has an arterial IV line in one foot and compression braces on her legs for blood circulation. But she is able to move her feet up and down. Praise God! The prayers, masses, and rosaries certainly have aided Claire in such a smooth recovery. We have seen Claire come out of much less complicated surgeries with more difficulties and pain. However, since we certainly rallied all the troops for prayerful intercession, her recovery has been, for the most part, very uneventful. Thank you all for your prayers; our family is so grateful to those who have kept Claire on the top of their intention list.

Murray Clan current events
Claire recently had another MRI given some weakness in her left arm and some severe pain she was experiencing. The MRI indicated there were no current syrinx issues and that she was still clear to have the surgery on Feb. 16th. We continue to pray that Claire will experience tremendous healing. We ask our Lady of Lourdes especially during her Feast day, Feb. 11th, for Claire's recovery of her legs and some organ functioning.
We also attended a beautiful mass at the Cathedral on Saturday for the World day of the sick. This was hosted by the Order of Malta. During the mass Claire received the sacrament of anointing in preparation for her upcoming surgery. This was a unique opportunity for us to be in solidarity with others who suffer, as well as those who care for them, and experience the strength and purpose of suffering. Each of those who were anointed participated with the suffering of Christ. Bishop Cordileone celebrated the mass and eloquently detailed the importance of being spiritually fed and healed as only our Lord can provide in the sacraments. The mass and anointing were unique supernatural opportunities to pray with Claire, and for Claire as she prepares for this very long and painful surgery. The timing of the surgery, the mass at the cathedral and Claire's presence could not be more providential. We are thankful to all for their patience and kindness as we hope and pray that this is the final surgery and healing is achieved through God's grace.

"There is cause for rejoicing here...."
"You may for a time have to suffer the distress of many trials but this is so that your faith, which is more precious than the passing splendor of fire tried gold, may by its genuineness lead to praise, glory, and honor when Jesus Christ appears." 1 Peter 1:6-9
This passage from 1Peter has allowed me to find peace amidst the struggles and sufferings of today. We have so much joy in our family and truly desire to understand the gifts and grace of God. We face the concern of Claire's upcoming surgery, and as we wait we prayerfully beseech God that it happens in a timely manner. She is scheduled to have surgery on February 16th. Claire continues to hope that it will will be moved to an earlier date given her pain and the problems she faces with sores on her back, feet and legs. And, although the surgery will be extensive and painful we continue to hope and pray for healing and recovery. We are thankful for all those who continue to pray for Claire and our family.
Also, this week after the miscarriage I had to undergo a DNC. The experience was truly surreal given that I have had the blessing of delivering 10 children. I love being pregnant. The experience of giving birth to a child is so wonderful. I have felt the excitement and trepidation of preparing for delivery but enduring it all in order to bring home a precious infant. Our experience going into the surgery center to see my OBGYN, who has delivered the last six of my children, contained the same trepidation with no excitement and only loss when a child left me.
I thank God for the grace and understanding we have come to know. This suffering we endure will enable us to more deeply appreciate His gifts and grace. The day of the surgery I read the meditation for the day from the Magnificat. These words were a gift from God and truly beneficial and I want to share them with you.
"Without sorrow one might perhaps be happy, but one would not be aware of it. What would such happiness amount to? It does not suffice to endure suffering in order to acquire experience This demands reflection about oneself and the essential conditions of life. With still greater reason, the utilization of experience is not thus acquired; it requires the tranquilizing of the soul in God; it takes love, without which suffering embitters and confuses the soul instead of enlightening it. Suffering is an extreme remedy which either cures the evil of makes it worse, which strengthens or kills. Both the physicians' prescription and His attendance are necessary. 'Unhappy is he,' says St. Bernard, 'who carries the cross of Jesus but who is not with Jesus....' We console a person by sympathizing with his grief; but especially by showing him its beauty."
(Fr. Sertillanges - 1948) I am thankful to God for showing me the beauty, and His patience with me as I learn. I have much to learn.

This passage from 1Peter has allowed me to find peace amidst the struggles and sufferings of today. We have so much joy in our family and truly desire to understand the gifts and grace of God. We face the concern of Claire's upcoming surgery, and as we wait we prayerfully beseech God that it happens in a timely manner. She is scheduled to have surgery on February 16th. Claire continues to hope that it will will be moved to an earlier date given her pain and the problems she faces with sores on her back, feet and legs. And, although the surgery will be extensive and painful we continue to hope and pray for healing and recovery. We are thankful for all those who continue to pray for Claire and our family.
Also, this week after the miscarriage I had to undergo a DNC. The experience was truly surreal given that I have had the blessing of delivering 10 children. I love being pregnant. The experience of giving birth to a child is so wonderful. I have felt the excitement and trepidation of preparing for delivery but enduring it all in order to bring home a precious infant. Our experience going into the surgery center to see my OBGYN, who has delivered the last six of my children, contained the same trepidation with no excitement and only loss when a child left me.
I thank God for the grace and understanding we have come to know. This suffering we endure will enable us to more deeply appreciate His gifts and grace. The day of the surgery I read the meditation for the day from the Magnificat. These words were a gift from God and truly beneficial and I want to share them with you.
"Without sorrow one might perhaps be happy, but one would not be aware of it. What would such happiness amount to? It does not suffice to endure suffering in order to acquire experience This demands reflection about oneself and the essential conditions of life. With still greater reason, the utilization of experience is not thus acquired; it requires the tranquilizing of the soul in God; it takes love, without which suffering embitters and confuses the soul instead of enlightening it. Suffering is an extreme remedy which either cures the evil of makes it worse, which strengthens or kills. Both the physicians' prescription and His attendance are necessary. 'Unhappy is he,' says St. Bernard, 'who carries the cross of Jesus but who is not with Jesus....' We console a person by sympathizing with his grief; but especially by showing him its beauty."

Good Bye 2010... Hello 2011!! (This post is a long one)
Happy New Year!!! It is hard to believe that 2010 is over. What a year it has been for the Murray Clan. We have all see John Mary grow so much in a year. He just celebrated his 1st birthday, he is walking and talking and a busy little boy. He is a joy to be around and we are so glad he is a new part of the family.
Fulton is almost 4 yrs. old and and after going through the terrible two's he has developed the most gentle disposition and the mildest temperament. He can be appreciated most for his personality and "cuteness." Michael is a Kindergartner and he works hard to learn his letters and numbers and keep up with his older brother Stephen who has improved dramatically in math, reading and communication skills. Stephen is in second grade and is now borrowing and and subtracting in math and he continues to amaze the family with his intelligence and wit. Joseph is doing well in school and has advanced a belt in American Shaolin Kenpo. His older brother Thomas has also advanced in their recent belt testing, as well as Kieran who may have skipped a belt according to his score on his belt test. Kieran is also working hard at graduating from eighth grade, his studies and boy scouts keep him and his parents busy.
Claire has had many blessings in health over the last year. She has gained weight and had the broviak removed last September because of her success. She has also not had surgery since the summer and continues to work hard in physical and occupational therapy. Sheila is in her last year of High School and is working on receiving her driver's license by her 18th birthday. She is also applying for colleges in pursuit of a nursing career. Yet, she is still praying and discerning what the will of God is and her vocation. Lastly, Matthew entered the seminary for the Diocese of Oakland. He is very much enjoying this stage of his life and wants to be challenged and encouraged to serve our Lord fully. Joe has been with his new job, at Wells Fargo bank, for a year now. He enjoys his job, and he appreciates the leadership of his boss who has been wonderful to him. He looks forward to working there in the year and remaining open to the will of God.
We have been so blessed in the 2010 year, thanks to the prayers and support of so many friends and family. We have had our sufferings and we continue to implore our Lord and His mother for guidance and strength. We continue to wait for the surgery date for Claire to correct her spine. She remains in pain, and hopes and prays that this surgery will be her last and most effective.

Today, the Gospel reading is especially beautiful and important as we ponder the words "he was named Jesus, the name given him by the angel before he was conceived in the womb." It was Mary's "yes" to God that enabled her to become the mother of God, and our mother. We are thankful to her and God for her "yes" Do we also say "yes" to God in everything He asks of us whether it be in our blessings or in our sufferings. Do we say yes in serving Him and enabling others to see the light of Christ in our actions and deeds.
May 2011 be year of prosperity and blessings. But, most importantly, may it be a year of coming to know and serve our Lord more deeply and doing His will in our "yes."

Merry, Merry Christmas!!!!
We are now in the Christmas season, what a beautiful time of the year. Although the weather may not indicate it the Church readings and prayers certainly do. During this octave of Christmas we celebrate many different feasts such as the feast of the Holy Family, St. John's feast day as well as the feast of the Holy Innocents. There is much to reflect on and give thanks and glory to God for His goodness. There is a different scene however out in the world. The decorations are down, the sales on Christmas items left in a pile are front and center in most stores on clearance, and the joy of the newly born king has been forgotten. As we reflect on the birth of the Savior the Church is so wise in celebrating the incarnation of God becoming man for an octave rather than just one day. We are reminded during this week of those who lived and died for Christ, from the newly born in the Holy Innocents, to St. John who rumor has it lived well past 100. Each of those who lived and died for Christ made sure to be mindful of what God did for them, not just for one day but for all eternity in stooping so low as to become a helpless child.
Our faith is a gift. And, at this time of giving we can be receptive of His gift of himself to us at Christmas, have we truly prepared for him, and are we rejoicing this week for the Love of God in sending His Son in order to redeem us and and call us to be with Him forever.
"Joy to the World, the Lord is come!!" Leave your decorations up, visit with family and friends and tell them you love them, assist those who need your help. Pray and thank God for this season and welcome Him into your life, and remember all of the wonderful things he has done for you.

A time for waiting... a time for hope...
Yes, Advent is upon us. We are awaiting the birth of the Savior, we are waiting, preparing the way, and anxious.
Claire has been home for two weeks and we are so glad to have her out of the hospital. Still, we recently saw the orthopaedic surgeon and Claire had a scoliosis x-ray. Her scoliosis has progressed and her spine has slowly developed into an s-shape. This deformity can cause damage to her organs as well as further complications to her spine and nervous system. We know that straightening her spine is crucial right now and the Orthopaedist concurs. Yet, he has not let us know the date of the surgery. He plans to place more rods and screws from her pelvis up to her mid-back where the current rods are holding up and straightening her neck. This area is more healthy bone given she did not undergo radiation in that area; the fusion of bone and hardware should heal rather quickly, but be very painful. Claire has already had two previous spinal fusion surgeries, she is very familiar with it and not looking forward to the experience. Yet she is anxious to have this curvature corrected, to have this surgery behind her. Claire wants to have the surgery and move on with her life, and school, and the future.We saw the surgeon last week and still do not have a surgery date. There are many different specialists involved in her care - the neurosurgeon, the orthopaedic surgeon, the plastic surgeon, not to mention the oncologist and the neurologist that all help to care for her total health. We are very blessed to have so many dedicated and compassionate surgeons and specialists monitoring and assisting in such delicate procedures. We also maintain hope because the Orthopaedist mentioned that she may regain some of her leg functioning once her spine is straightened. This is our prayer as we wait in this joyful season of Hope for our Savior to come. We pray for His healing touch, we hope for success, we wait for a date and we are anxious for results.
There are always so many things to pray for, so many opportunities in our lives need prayer, members of our family who need prayer, our friends need prayer, the Church needs prayer, the world needs prayer. We are so thankful to so many who keep Claire and the Murray family among their prayer lists. Be assured of our prayers for all of you who have been so generous in praying for us.
Once we have a date for the surgery and the next step we will certainly post it. But in the mean time we wait.... and always have hope...
Claire is home!!!
Thank you for your prayers. Claire came home from the hospital today, she is still on IV antibiotics through a picc line in her arm. She takes antibiotics every six hours and a stronger dose than she would receive in a capsule. This should clear up a majority of the infection and hopeflully prepare her for the spinal fusion surgery in a few weeks. The plastic surgeon who closed during the surgery, and is wonderful, assured us that the surgery would prevent the pressure ulcers from occuring again and allow her back to heal.
We are so grateful to have her home in time for Thanksgiving. What a Blessing and we are so Thankful! May God continue to bless you for your generous prayers and kindness.

Claire Update
Claire had exploratory surgery on her back yesterday in order to uncover the wound and to do cultures for infection. Both the orthopedic surgeon and the plastic surgeon noted that the infection had not covered the hardware and looked to be more local. They also discovered she had a pressure ulcer where the last screw head was located. The scoliosis in her back has progressed and as a result the rods and screws are pushing from the inside out. That is what created the pressure ulcer.
The future? They are doing cultures to see what type of infection is growing, and what kind of antibiotics to treat the infection. Given the results of the cultures will determine the next step. Claire will need another spinal fusion to extend the hardware from mid-back down to her pelvis. This will correct the scoliosis progression as well as relieve the pressure from the hardware that is occurring within. We also hope and pray that with the spinal correction she may regain some strength in her legs and arms. So, we wait to see what kind of infection to determine when she can have another spinal fusion. Although the surgery to correct the scoliosis would be very hard and very painful for Claire, the family believes it will benefit her and her future. We are praying for a quick and painless recovery from this surgery, so that she can come home for Thanksgiving. We pray that she will be able and ready to have surgery in the next few weeks, we pray for it's success as well as steady healing and recovery. We pray that the surgery will be completed and recovered in time for Christmas with the family.

She has an infection, open wounds on her back that are not healing, a lump forming on her back that could be from the scoliosis or from wound infection. She also has pressure sores on her heals because she cannot move her legs the pressure from keeping them immobile formed blisters and sores that are not healing. Her broviak was removed over two weeks ago, and looked so promising for her continued improvement. Yet with this latest hospital stay in order to have her take the strong coarse of antibiotics she needs a central vein, so a pik-line was placed back in her arm. Which did cause her alot of distress and pain.
Claire is very delicate, her bones, her skin are much more fragile than before. When Claire returns home she will need a hospital bed and special precautions to allow her body to heal.
She may need surgery this week, to correct the issues in her back. She may need future surgery to help with the weakness in her arms. The neurosurgeon is not sure he can prevent further deterioration. This may lead to loss of her arm function as well as her diaphragm and the need for a ventilator.
The Murray clan is taking all this one day at a time. Claire's spirits are good, we feel that God is faithful. Our Mother Mary has been so generous to us, Claire will persevere through this and certainly recover with your prayers.
Please continue to keep her in your prayers. It is profoundly obvious that these prayers sustain, and comfort Claire. Without them, I am not sure where she and her family would be.

For the feast of San Lorenzo Ruiz in September of this year, Jeremy Santos and some of the other seminarians of St. Patrick's in Menlo Park did an excellent job in the music video describing the life and martyrdom of San Lorenzo. There is beautiful footage of the seminary as well as the seminarians, and Matthew is one, portraying the other martyrs who were killed along with San Lorenzo when they would not renounce their faith.
Make sure to watch until they end, it becomes very comical. Enjoy!!

The Giants trump Halloween!!!
I am not much of a Giants fan, nor a baseball fan, or even a sports fan for that matter. But, over the last few months the Murrays have been sweatin' over the World Series and the Giants. Well they are now the World Champions!! And, I was never more thankful for Giant's baseball then on Halloween. I am not much of a follower of baseball like the rest of the Murray Clan, but I am even less of a Halloween fan.
I dread Halloween. I don't even want to put up the October calendar in the classroom because it will become the 30 day count down to the 31st, and eventually melt down when the day does not come soon enough. Also, the sugar addictions become more and more apparent doing any shopping from the beginning of September until the infamous day arrives. But, that is something we can normally tolerate and live through in our home, what has become worse within the last five years is the trend toward ghoulish and gross. The Halloween days of my past and Joe's past are gone. The children of today no longer dress as Superman, or Batman, or a princess with plastic masks that prevent you from seeing and breathing. No, we see young children show up at our home covered in fake blood, detached limbs, and chain saw massacre costumes. My children are terrified. That fear is a normal, healthy fear. I am not going to try and tell them that the terrifying haunted house with eery screams and zombies is alright because it is Halloween. To be afraid is normal, to be complacent about such costumes and events is not.
In the last few years I have tried to escape, choosing even to go to Costco on Halloween with the kids because I knew it would not be crowded, and of course to escape the crazy and scary happenings out in the neighborhoods. Yes this may sound like child abuse to some, but for our large family it was a safe haven.
This year, however, because of the Giants we watched the World Series game with the family. There was no one out beggin' for candy. It was more akin to "Halloween what? We're watching the game!" What a blessing!!
As catholics we have lost our identity. Halloween was a time of preparation for the happenings of the next day when we celebrated with the Saints. We looked forward to the end, to be in Heaven. Not behind to look at the events on earth.

"The Saints have no need of honor from us, neither does our devotion add to the slightest thing to what is theirs. Clearly, if we venerate their memory, it serves us, not them. But I tell you, when I think of them, I feel myself inflamed with a tremendous yearning....We long to share in the citizenship of heaven."
This is the message we try to teach our children. this life is passing, not as ghouls and witches. As people longing to see our God face to face. I was glad for a respite from Halloween horror with Giant victory. May we all reach the giant Saints in heaven one day, especially through their prayers and intercession.

"Different...Not Less!"
This is happy Stephen. I know it may be obvious to some, but, for some time it was not clear to Stephen. Stephen has autism. Stephen is incredibly smart, his siblings can attest to that, his mind works diferently than others. He is different than his siblings, than other children, and even different than his parents. Of course, everyone is different. God, in his goodness created everyone unique, and precious. We are not all the same because each one has a soul that is individual and distinct. Yet most of us can process information similarly and respond to stimuli in the same way, that is how our brains were designed. Stephen cannot. He cannot read people's emotions like most other children, his senses are highly intensified so even the slightest smell or sound can be painful and bothersome for Stephen and that is not the case for other children. These skills make Stephen different than others.Our family recently watched the "Temple Grandin" movie about a woman who has autism.

She is brilliant but she processes the world differently than most people. She learned growing up that she was "different, not less." And, this was during a time that autistic children were institutionalized with possible shock treatment, something we all know to be archaic and cruel today. She did not overcome her differences she incorporated them into her world and informed others who wanted to interact with her about her world. Stephen's uniqueness is not obvious to most, not like Claire whose disability can be seen because she uses a wheel chair and sadly she will receive stares as a result. For Stephen, he is has no physical handicaps but if he is in a social situation he may repeat a movie, speak very loudly and hum to himself which eventually causes stares and frustrations from others who do not understand his ways of managing his surroundings. Once someone begins to talk with Stephen they are more than aware of his limitations we put them at ease by explaining his gift of autism. Some believe that we should not draw attention to the label and allow everyone to treat Stephen as if his uniqueness were not an issue. But, I believe, and am now affirmed in that belief after watching the movie, that to allow people to understand the genius of God and the wonderful capabilities of those who are different we need to proclaim his gifts, to educate and to help others feel comfortable around those who have "special needs." Of course, this is not a license for pity or acceptions. Rather, Stephen is still required to participate in his family and the world and he is expected to demonstrate the proper manners, respect and reverence he should have for God, for himself, for family and humanity. After watching the movie the Murrays were all in awe over the similarities of Temple Grandin and their brother, however even given their autism they are still different, just not less.
Each of us has been given a unique opportunity to allow others to benefit from our presence. Certainly, those in my own circle may benefit because they have to put up with me and it is their own personal purgatory, I think of my husband of course, but mostly I benefit from those God has entrusted to my care. Stephen and Claire certainly have caused us all to limit our selfishenss, to start looking outside of ourselves and enabled us to grow in self giving. Isn't that why we are all here?
I highly recommend the movie to anyone who spends time with the Murray's and expecially with Stephen, or even around other children and people with autism. Stephen is a great kid, and we are so thankful to God!!
Searching for and Maintaining Peace?
Yes, that is the question. School is in full swing, it has been over a month since we began, and with seven currently enrolled in elementary, high school or kindergarten there is alot of activity and not much peace. With the Fall season brings lots of activities for the children as well as the ongoing doctor's appt's., physical therapy and occupational therapy for Claire. Peace? Got Peace?
This chaos, however, is one I certainly can appreciate because it does not include hospital stays, surgeries, and added worry and concerns. (Claire continues to do well thanks to the prayer warriors out there - Thank you!!)
I would like to mention another book I recently completed and it assisted in helping me find peace. And as I finish some good books I do hope to mention the MurrayClan12 book club, which I hope will be a better club to belong to than that of Oprah's, and may be a better compass toward holiness, you can be the judge. The book has to do with finding peace among chaos - especially the world we live in.
I was told about the book in spiritual direction, (I will allow your imagination to go there regarding my confession and the need for a book about peace) and after ordering and reading it I have found it to be very helpful. I tend to worry alot, see the glass half full, and lose hope. This book was truly a benefit.
"Our search for God, our saintliness, and our efforts to love and serve our neighbors are also frequently fraught with agitation and anxiety instead of being full of confidence and peace, as they should be if we were to find ourselves imbued with the attitude of small children, as the Gospels command us to." This quote is from the book Searching for and Maintaining Peace by Fr. Jacques Phillipe.
The book is a quick read, it is only 110 pages but it outlines so clearly Interior peace, how to respond to situations which cause us to lose peace, as well as the wonderful Saints who have discovered ways in which they were able to find peace. Saints struggle with finding peace as well.
The book opens up with a very crucial and pivotal Gospel passage from John 15: 5: "Apart from Me, you can do nothing." I have heard this often, but it truly had an impact on me when I discovered that Our Lord does not say without Me you can so some things, or a few things. No. Without Christ we can do NOTHING. Including finding peace, teaching children, serving others, and being a good wife and mother.
May our Lord grant you His peace, and if you need some help you can certainly look for some answers in the book.

Matthew, our eldest son, entered St. Patrick's seminary August 21, 2010. He will spend two years in pre-theology and another 5 yrs. preparing for the priesthood. This is Matthew's call. Although Joe and I are very proud of him, in no way could we decide his vocation for him.
The week before Matthew left for the seminary, Joe and I let him know that if he ever felt that this was not the will of God we would support him and never push him into a vocation in which he did not feel called.
Matthew immediately reassured us that he never felt "pushed" by us into the priesthood. He explained that he had never felt at peace while at school discerning his profession and worrying about what his niche was in the world. Today, after accepting the call, Matthew told us he feels confident he is doing the will of Christ and he desires to serve Christ through His Church. Now he no longer doubts his path, and Matthew is sure of the meaning of his identity.
These young seminarians need your prayers. They have chosen a path, a
narrow road, "in the midst of a painful attack on the priesthood and the
Church. Because of the terrible sins of a very few priests, the goodness and sacrifice of so many priests has been ignored." Fr. Mariusz Koch, CFR
To be a Catholic today, let alone a priest of the Catholic church is counter-cultural. It is a challenge, it can only be explained by the cross, by picking up that cross and following Him - Jesus Christ. This is the theology of courage, of white martyrdom, of HOPE!

May God continue to bless the Church with young men who desire to serve our Lord in His Church and will soon begin to live as an "alter Christus."

Computer trouble...
Yes, the trouble with computers is... you can't live with them and can't live without them. And, if your computer is down - you are without. It can be a positive experience because there is more time to do other things, but if you don't have the computer because it has crashed or broken there is an increased sense of fear given the material that may be lost from your computer. In times like these, when my computer is down it is time to realize that all things are a gift - including broken things. It just may be a time to pray more, reflect more and be more thankful. Soooo, until it can be repaired, I have had to borrow one in order to update this, I will thinking be about things to write and update on the family.

A Murray Vacation
It is not often the Murray clan goes on vacation. There are many things to prepare, to worry about and situations to handle. Yet, for the first time in a long time the Murray's had the opportunity (through the kindness of Joe's parents who allowed us to use their time share in Tahoe for a few days) to spend in beautiful Lake Tahoe during August. It was much fun for everyone. The older children, Matthew, Sheila, Kieran and Claire, were a big help given that it is alot of work, they were great sports and enjoyed being and playing with their younger siblings. We all certainly enjoyed our last vacation as a family for a long time. As you can tell by the pictures, the lake was a big hit. I have not been able to be there for a few years, and it is so gorgeous that it takes your breath away and truly gives glory to God for His creation.
Amazingly, Stephen took right to the beach and the water and it was hard to take him away. Everyone, especially Fulton, Michael, Thomas and Joseph, enjoyed the pool as well. We took long walks, went to Reno to visit the Cathedral, and spent time talking and laughing. We had a wonderful trip and enjoyed our time together tremendously. Thank you Bill and Mary Lou for generously offering your stay to us this year. You are in our prayers. We love you and miss you.

Thank you Ralph and Brigitte Desimone for all of your kindness, patience and generosity. Our family has truly benefited from all of the help you have provided for our family with everything from schooling to marriage training. The Diocese of Oakland is truly blessed to have a wonderful dedicated couple devote over 30 yrs. of experience to nurture and prepare marriages. At this pivotal time in our country when marriage is under attack and decay your perseverance in the fight is truly heroic. May God continue to bless your work. Thank you again for all you do! We received a meal the other day...
Claire has been home for almost a week; and each time she comes home from the hospital she suffers for a few days adjusting to medications so that her system becomes familiar with the changes from the hospital. As we all try to help and allow her to rest, other minor details follow by the wayside...like eating meals. About mid day last week I tried to figure out what to do for dinner, I was unsure of where Claire would be given her struggles with pain and headaches. I hoped and prayed we could get something together rather than stress out about it. This prayer led the kind Figueroa family to our home and they brought us a very delicious meal complete with a salad and dessert. What a big hit it was for all of the family, and how very timely and appreciated it was by me. We are so very grateful to the Figueroa family for their generosity as well as the daily prayers that they mentioned they say on Claire's behalf. As I have written before, the prayers, masses and rosaries said for Claire and our family is what continues to sustain the Murray's. I am positive that without these graces from heaven we would be unable to make it together and with the peace we attempt to maintain in our hearts and home. The Figueroa's kindness can not adequately be thanked in material form, still our prayers for them as well as the treasures received in heaven will most likely surpass any thank you card or phone call we could offer.
