Matthew attended the Beatification of Blessed Paul VI

Seminarian reflects on Blessed Paul VI
Diocese of Oakland seminarian Matthew Murray, who studies at the Pontifical North American College in Rome, shares his reflection on the celebration of the beatification of Pope Paul IV: "Pope Paul VI truly is an inspiration. He was a pastor who wanted to spread the Good News of Jesus Christ throughout the world. It was truly a joy to be present at the Mass in which Pope Francis declared Pope Paul a blessed of the Church. A garment stained by Pope Paul's blood after an attempt was made on his life in Manila was placed near the altar during the Mass. Pope Francis wore a chasuble given to Pope Paul on his 80th birthday and used one of the new blessed's chalices during the Mass as well. During the Mass, I prayed that we, members of the Diocese of Oakland, might have the same enthusiasm in teaching others about Jesus." Pope Francis beatified Blessed Paul VI in front of 30,000 people at the concluding Mass of the Synod of Bishops on the family Oct. 19, praising the late pope as the "great helmsman" of the Second Vatican Council and founder of the synod, as well as a "humble and prophetic witness of love for Christ and his church."
